CHALLENGE
As part of Filipino American History and Biography course taught by Gem Daus at the University of Maryland at College Park, the students worked teams analyzing political cartoons published during the late 1800s to early 1900s.

OBJECTIVE
Working as part of a team, we chose two political cartoons to analyze and describe the mood, perspective, and overall message. The group decided to create poetry to synthesize our understanding and accompany the prose with animated versions of the political cartoon.

RESULT
The project was completed over five days and succeeded in communicating our understanding of the subject matter in a creative and entertaining solution revealing the prevailing attitudes of American society, politics, and business toward expansion and the themes of manifest destiny, benevolent assimilation, and racism in America. This project helped expand our knowledge about the hidden history of Filipinos and American Imperialist expansion.
